From Surviving to Thriving
Every minute, 11 people have a stroke in Australia and 1 in 4 of these strokes are in young people. Your gift today will power data-driven research at The Florey, ensuring more people not only survive a stroke but recover well and thrive.

On an ordinary day over a decade ago, Peter, fit and healthy, suddenly lost feeling on his right side. Rushed to hospital, he found a system not yet prepared for stroke. Instead of a specialised unit, he spent the next 24 hours in the Emergency department. This critical delay was followed by months of frustrating, inconsistent therapy, leaving Peter to wonder how different his life might be if he had received the right care, right away.
When 83-year-old Joy woke up feeling giddy, she knew the signs of stroke. Thanks to her quick thinking and a medical system prepared for this exact moment, her life was saved. After a scan revealed a dangerous clot, she was immediately admitted to a specialised Stroke Unit where surgeons performed a life-saving clot retrieval. The entire procedure was completed within three hours of the stroke's onset, and remarkably, Joy was discharged the very next day.

30 years ago, Brooke suffered a major stroke while she was still just a teenager. "One moment, I was a teenager full of dreams and plans, and the next, my life was pulled out from under me." Her recovery involved re-learning how to walk, write, and talk. Back then, recovery programs weren't designed with younger stroke survivors in mind, leading to a long and challenging rehabilitation road.
Now Brooke supports Florey researchers to better understand young stroke so we can prevent it, treat it more effectively and improve recovery.
The difference between Peter's long recovery and Joy's remarkable outcome is not a matter of luck - it is years of dedicated research like that at The Florey.
Through research we have helped:
By including stroke survivors like Brooke in our decision-making, we ensure that researchers tackle the issues that matter most to them.
But we still have so much work to do.
We urgently need your help to ensure every single patient receives personalised life-saving care that Joy did, making her story the standard, not the exception.
Your gift today will fund vital research to help people survive, recover well and get back to living their best life.
